ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising

BAREBOAT CRUISING

If you have completed Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) and want to learn what you need to know when chartering an unfamiliar boat in unfamiliar waters, this program is your answer.  Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) is three days in length and classes are scheduled to accommodate your availability.

This course is three full days (21 to 24 hours) on the water.

Prerequisites:

Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103).

International Proficiency Certificate

Successful completion of Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) will make you eligible for an ASA International Proficiency Certificate which is widely accepted by many charter companies.

 

Course Includes:

  • Three days of on-the-water practical instruction
  • Cruise planning
  • Items to bring from home
  • Clearing Customs & Immigration; documentation and procedures
  • How to provision for a one-week cruise
  • Drinking water requirements
  • Sailboat systems, knowledge & troubleshooting
  • Galley operations & safety
  • How to manage the refrigerator and freezer
  • Power consumption & conservation
  • Auxiliary engine operation & troubleshooting
  • Routine maintenance procedures
  • Fresh water tank operation
  • Proper marine toilet (head) operation & maintenance
  • What to inspect on the boat that the charter company won't point out

  • Weather forecast interpretation
  • Health, safety & first aid
  • Emergency operations
  • Coastal navigation, including basic chartplotting
  • Electronic chartplotter and handheld GPS tutorial
  • Sailing autopilot tutorial
  • Maneuvering under power in crowded harbors
  • Advanced sail control for optimizing points of sail and heel in light, moderate & heavy weather conditions
  • Docking, anchoring and mooring techniques, under both power and sail
  • Person overboard recovery
  • Knots & their applications
  • Night sailing, navigation and piloting.
  • Things that you would assume are done automatically but are sometimes not
  • Dinghy & outboard motor operation
  • ASA 104 classes are three days.
  • Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) is taught on New Dawn, a 33' Hunter 336.
  • Class size is limited to four students.
  • Call for tuition, availability, and family discounts.
  • 50% deposit at enrollment.
  • Full payment due 30 days before scheduled class.
